Points of Difference between BLS and ACLS

BLS or Basic Life Support is a type of pre-medical hospital care that is provided by the health care professionals like nurses, doctors, physicians and paramedics to treat patients with respiratory problems, cardiac arrest or during an obstructed airway. On the other hand, ACLS or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is a type of healthcare treatment provided to patients to treat serious cardiovascular conditions like heart attack, cardiac arrest and stroke.

Although both these life support techniques are used interchangeably and have a common objective of saving a patient’s life from cardiac arrest in most cases, they also have significant differences between them:

  1. While all health professionals know how to provide basic life support, it is not mandatory for everyone to know the ACLS treatment. Only the medical professionals who treat serious health conditions must know this treatment procedure.

  2. The BLS course requires less training and hence, can be completed faster. However, the ACLS course requires knowledge beyond basic medical emergencies and thus, the course takes longer to finish.

  3. BLS treats mild medical conditions whereas ACLS treats severe health issues.

  4. BLS life-saving techniques can be performed by anyone who knows them and do not require the patient to be admitted to the hospital. However, ACLS needs to be performed by a health professional only and in a proper hospital setting.

  5. An AED or automated external defibrillator is an electronic tool used in both BLS and ACLS treatment. However, ACLS treatment requires other resources as well, like ECGs, intravenous medications and intubation materials.

Thus, these are some of the basic differences between BLS and ACLS treatment procedures.
